Greetings from a new member - I have an F255D that is a great machine. I am new to PTO's and my tractor has a lever with 4 positions for the PTO...

I gather from what I have searched for, that the different positions give different PTO RPM - since my "new to me" flail mower is supposed to run at 540
RPM, do I pick the PTO lever position to "make" the output speed 540 based on (varying) engine RPM.

Thanks for any insight

Welcome @bozcorob. On those Yanmars, the PTO lever selects the PTO range, then you use engine RPM to dial in 540. Usually there’s a mark on the tach for it, so pick the 540 setting and run the engine at the indicated speed.

Good question, choose the PTO range when the engine is either idling or off, and never when the implements are running. Also, make sure to disengage it before shutting down. It helps keep the driveline in better shape.
